We love taking day trips on vacation. My father in law told us that the kids would really love to visit the oil well. I thought, why not? What a great stop that was. It was full of education and I learned something too. Oil drilling started in Titusville, PA! So off we went to the Drake Well Museum and Park.
Let’s start with why the boys make it difficult to take family photos.
They just can’t be normal.
The tour start with a film discussing the discovery of oil and it’s uses and how drilling began. Turns out that the whole thing started with finding a new way to light homes instead of using whale oil, they could refine oil and use kerosene. The film is geared toward children but it is put together very well. Once the film was over, we went through the museum that covered everything dealing with the discovery and use of oil in history and how Pennsylvania fit into the whole shebang.
The the real fun started as they were able to tour the well area. The oil well is still kept fully functional and there is are people who explain how everything works and run the equipment including the original drill and well.
It was a great day trip and highly educational. If you’re in North Western PA, stop out.
